This past weekend, we headed out to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma to do some hiking. This is one of our favorite areas to go explore outdoors and we always seem to get one nice weekend in January. So we jumped at the chance to get outside and stretch our legs!
Our favorite area to go within the refuge is a place called Charon's Garden. It's a large area with several official trails that wind past caves and waterfalls. It's also a very popular area and we found the parking lot packed on this particular Saturday. So we quickly retreated to a lesser known spot in the same general area.
When we hike, we have a rough idea of where we're heading but we don't usually follow the trails, choosing instead to explore and find new places. We're rarely disappointed! This time, we found a new cave on the north side of the mountain that we had to climb through to reach the other side. That was the highlight of the day!
Denny brought along the GoPro on a chest mount so that we could film some of our adventure. It can't quite capture the beauty of the place but it's a fun record of our climb.
